Administrator Persona:

This persona was developed based on insights gathered from interviews with music teachers. It served as a foundational reference throughout the design process, ensuring the app aligns with the needs and expectations of its primary users.

Experience Map

I created this journey map to gain a deeper understanding of my users journey, enabling me to identify and address potential pain points during the interface design process. By visualizing the user’s experience, I ensured the design was intuitive, efficient, and aligned with their needs.

Challenges

Implementing a Tutorial

Based on user testing I identified an issue with initial onboarding and how the user initially understood the app, the user did not know how to complete certain tasks because they had never been shown how to, in my case the administrator was used to using spread sheets to conduct such tasks therefore they were not aware of all the functions and abilities of this app.

Solution

The solution was simple they needed to be taught!

To solve this issue I implemented a tutorial for both the administrator and the student so that there was a clear understanding. This tutorial was made always available in case the user forgot certain steps and wanted a refresh.

Student Interface

Musical Instrument Inventory Management Application

Overview

Instrack provides a convenient way for music educators to keep track of their instrument inventory. Our goal is to promote an ease of connection between the administration and the students throughout the borrowing process. Instrack has many practical and effective features so this process can run smoothly in many different situations.

Helping music teachers streamline equipment inventory management

Reimagining the way music teachers lend out intruments and keep track of them within a school environment

Ideation

Reflection

This project allowed me to gain more experience in prototyping, and help to bring interfaces to life with more complex motion. Being able to adapt quickly to interface changes allowed me to develop my thinking process and workflow for collaboration between UI and prototyping.

It has helped me professionally as well, as this was a large-scale project in a short time frame. It allowed me think more rapidly, and develop more clear design decisions.

Research

I began with researching and understanding the domain of music, with the goal of identifying a problem space which may be addressed and solved with an interface. Led brainstorming session within my team. Based on the research I identified the need for an interface which facilitates instrument tracking/sorting, specifically within an educational environment.

Similar inventory management apps

Findings:

  • Most existing apps focus on product sales, such as warehouse or store management systems.

  • They often lack detailed visuals or high-quality images of the items.

  • Return policies or restrictions are typically not clearly defined or integrated.

  • These apps are usually designed as one-sided platforms, primarily catering to managers rather than accommodating multiple user roles.

Conclusions:

  • Develop a dedicated app specifically for managing music equipment.

  • Incorporate high-quality images, step-by-step instructions, and detailed descriptions for each item.

  • Streamline the borrowing process to ensure it’s user-friendly and efficient.

  • Design a dual-sided platform catering to both students and the music director, ensuring seamless interaction and functionality for both user groups.
